Friday Mid-day Gap Fire Update

12:00 noon

Good day!

After a few tense hours last night, we were able to settle down into sleep and had a good night's sleep, sleeping in late.

This morning we awoke to clear skies, and a few actual clouds that mixed in parts with smoke. The smoke is less dense, and no ash is falling on us this morning. Whew! Last night it was really bad. Mike and I took a short walk to see if we could see flames, and the air quality was scary it was so bad! Here is some pictures of my car this morning.

There have been no new evacuations or evacuation warnings. Whew!

Winds are calm today. Let’s hope they stay calm throughout the day and night.

Mike has to go to work at 3:00 today, to work the beach for the Independence Day celebration. Kevin still wants to go to the fireworks (he bought some light-up necklaces to sell), but Erin and I are wary. Unless things change drastically for the better, I think we'll stay home. I don't want to leave the dogs here alone.

The latest statistics are:

Acres burned: 5,400
Containment: 10%
Crews on site: 1,072
Other resources: 30 engines, 20 aircraft, 16 dozers
Injuries: 0
Structures burned: 0
Structures threatened: 1700
Cause: Man-made. Unknown if intentional or accidental.
Weather forecast: Gusts of 30mph winds N; current temp: 75; 25% humidity
Weather for Santa Barbara

Update 12:45pm

We lost power again for about half an hour. I was in the middle up uploading the pictures I forgot to upload when I published my post! Sorry for the confusion.

We hold these truths to be self-evident

HAPPY
INDEPENDENCE DAY!

I love the Fourth of July! It is a good time to reflect on the good parts of our country. We are so lucky to live here, in this age, despite the screwed-up morals of our current leadership.

Our founding fathers were so wise! They left us with wonderful maps to follow for the stewardship of the country (except the screwy language of the 2nd Amendment--did they all drop acid right before writing that one?).

In case you haven't read them in a while, here they are.

The Declaration of Independence

The Constitution of the United States of America

Best wishes for a safe, happy Independence Day!

Thursday Evening Gap Fire Update

9:45 pm

We lost power at about 7:15 for a couple hours. I'll tell ya, things seem worse in the dark, especially when right about the same time, they announced another mandatory evacuation, one that is pretty close.

They ordered an evacuation for North of the Patterson curve from Patterson Avenue to Fairview.

Here is where that area is. Click on the blue balloons to get a description of what I'm talking about.

Needless to say, we are a little nervous. We packed up a few more things and are ready to go if needed. We're calm and being vigilant.

Reportedly, 3000 acres have burned. 1000 homes are threatened.

To answer Poss's earlier comment: Unfortunately, the rains stopped in March or so. The humidity fluctuates depending on the winds. When those sundowners happen, the air comes from the desert, so not only do we get fast dangerous winds, it is hot dry air. If the winds blow from the ocean, all is well: moist air blowing toward the backcountry. Just hope for no sundowners.

Thanks for all of your concern. Don't worry too much. We'll be fine.

Thursday Afternoon Gap Fire Update

5:00 pm

There is a new evacuation order for West Camino Cielo west of the Highway 154 (near the start of the fire), and the evacuation "warning" area has expanded west (away from us) to Winchester Canyon. The fire has burned 2600 acres. The Governator has declared a state of emergency, and apparently our fire will take priority for the already-stretched firefighting resources in the state.

The sky is covered with thick smoke, and big honkin' ashes are falling on us. This morning when I went to my car to go to work, I noticed this ash on the door/window junction.

This piece of leaf ash is about 1" across.

Here are some pictures that I took last night at about 9:30pm. These were taken from this spot looking northwest.

I know they aren't the best pictures of the fire, but you can imagine how unnerving it is to see the flames just a few miles away.

They've canceled the fireworks in Goleta, but as far as I know the fireworks down at West Beach in Santa Barbara are still on.

There is a possibility of another power outage. The City of Goleta put out a reverse-911 call this morning just to inform residents of the updates. I was glad to see it works. I'm also glad I saved an old-fashioned land-line phone that is not electric, so that we may still have phone service in a power outage!

Here is a link to a map, courtesy of the Independent.

I'll keep you posted. So far, so good. Luckily, winds are staying calm, and that is the best news.

UPDATE 6:40

The lights have been flickering off and on for the last few minutes. I have a feeling we're in for another dark night.

Thursday Morning Gap Fire Update

7:50am

I had planned to update you last night, but at about 7:15, we lost power. It was restored by 11:30pm. The power outage affected the whole area, from Carpinteria to Goleta.

Erin and I sat by candlelight and worked, wrote and read. Kevin went to his friend's house to play poker in the dark. Poor Kibble was terrified and trembling all evening. She is afraid of light, as you recall. The candles frightened her. She was glued to my side and insisted that I keep my hand on her.

Reports are that mild sundowners did increase the fire to 1900 acres. It is said to be 5% contained. No new evacuations have been ordered. I took some pictures from our neighborhood last night. Later today, I'll see if any are worth posting.

Classes were canceled today again. I hope they'll be in session again by Monday.

More later.

Wednesday Afternoon Gap Fire Update

3:30pm

I took these pictures this afternoon at about 1:00pm from this spot. The photo is looking north.

Not much has changed. 300 acres as of 2:00pm. Lots of helicopters flying around. They are saying 5% contained. Still no cause identified. There was a press conference at 2:00pm. Here is the video from the news.

There have been a few ashes floating around, and the light definitely looks "strange" outside. Otherwise, all is well right now. If the winds don't start up, we're fine. If the sundowners kick in, it will be unpredictable.

I've got photos and important papers packed in the trunk.

Watch this space.

Wednesday Morning Gap Fire Update

7:00 am

They are calling it the "Gap Fire."

The only news is that summer school classes at Dos Pueblos High School have been cancelled as the school is being used as a command center for the fire fighting effort. Erin: "YES!"

I smelled smoke finally when I woke up. I hear aircraft up there. The weather is bright and sunny but there is no wind. As of now, the fire is about 200 acres. Flames 15-20 feet high. It is in rugged, steep terrain. The cause is said to be human-caused, but no other information.

We're hanging tight.

This is a better link for news. You can see picutres from a link there.

Fire News

There is a fire burning up in the mountains just north of us. It is a couple miles northeast of "A" from what I can understand. Our house is near "B."

They are not calling for evacuations, just to be on alert and watch the TV. I'm getting a few things together, but I'm not worried.

No structures threatened at this time. The weather looks cooperative so far. No real winds. It is almost 18 years to the day of the Painted Cave Fire.

I'll keep you updated.

*********************************

Update 10:20pm.

Mandatory evacuations for Glen Annie Canyon and La Patera Canyon. Those are the canyons to the north of Glen Annie Road and La Patera Road north of Cathedral Oaks.

There is an evacuation "warning" for the areas between Fairview and Glen Annie north of Cathedral Oaks Road.

I've got photos and important papers packed. Now, I'm going to pack a small suitcase. I seriously doubt anything will happen to us.

Watch this space.

*******************************

Update 11:30pm

The weather continues to cooperate. Winds are calm. Air tankers will resume in the daylight. There are no changes in evacuation orders or in the general nature of the fire. The TV news has signed off to regular programming. I'll update again in the morning. I'm going to bed.

Well, tingle my bell!

Judges cite nonsense poem in Guantanamo case

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer

June 30, 2008

A federal appeals court reviewing evidence at Guantanamo Bay compared a Bush administration legal argument to one made by a hapless, dimwitted character in a 19th century nonsense poem by Lewis Carroll.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit cited the 1876 poem, "The Hunting of the Snark," in ruling that the military improperly labeled a Chinese Muslim as an enemy combatant. The ruling was issued last week but an unclassified version of the opinion was released only Monday.

It was the first time a court has reviewed the military's decision-making and considered whether a detainee should be held. The ruling provides guidance to federal district judges, who are about to begin reviewing dozens of such cases now that the Supreme Court says detainees can challenge their detention in federal court.

The appeals court said military review panels, known as Combatant Status Review Tribunals, were unable to assess much of the evidence against the detainee, Huzaifa Parhat, and at times treated accusations as evidence.

"The big issue now is, can any CSRT decision survive this kind of scrutiny?" Parhat's lawyer, Susan Baker Manning said.

Parhat is one of a group of Chinese Muslims, known as Uighurs, being held at Guantanamo Bay. Their case has become a diplomatic and legal headache for the U.S., which has tried to find a country willing to accept the Uighurs (pronounced WEE'-gurs) even as it defended its decision to hold them as enemy combatants.

The Justice Department concedes that Parhat never fought against the U.S. and says it has no evidence he was planning to do so. The case hinges on Parhat's connection to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, a militant group that demands separation from China. Parhat says he considers China, not the United States, the enemy.

The U.S. says it has classified intelligence that ETIM is affiliated with al-Qaida, though officials have not identified the source of that intelligence. The judges said there's credible evidence that the source is the Chinese government, "which may be less than objective with respect to the Uighurs."

The three-member court, which was made up of two Republican judges and one Democrat, was particularly pointed in its criticism of the argument that evidence is reliable because it appears on multiple documents.

"The government insists that the statements made in the documents are reliable because the State and Defense Departments would not have put them in intelligence documents were that not the case," the court wrote. "This comes perilously close to suggesting that whatever the government says must be treated as true."

The judges compared the argument to the logic in Carroll's nonsense poem, in which a hapless crew hunts for a creature that is never quite defined. The Bellman, the ship's leader, led his men across the ocean, guided by a map that was just a blank piece of paper. He rallied and reassured his crew simply by repeating himself.

"I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true," the Bellman says in the poem.

"Lewis Carroll notwithstanding, the fact that the government has 'said it thrice' does not make an allegation true," the court wrote.

The court said Parhat deserved a new hearing or should be released — though it didn't say to where he would be released. The U.S. does not want to send him to China for fear he will be tortured. Justice Department spokesman Erik Ablin said the agency is evaluating its options.

Early Summer Hike

I walked along San Antonio Creek again today. It was a real pretty morning after the fog burned off.

Now that it is summer, the wildflowers are just about gone. The creek is quite low, and even dried up in long stretches.

Low Water

No water

There were very few flowers. Here was an asparagus-looking plant at the top. Maybe it is indeed asparagus?

Though the area is drying up, I did enjoy seeing a bunny, bees, butterflies, boulders, a bunch of lizards, and birds!

Not the bunny I saw (he was too fast), but one like it.

A bee enjoying a flower

Cabbage Butterfly

Sandstone Boulder and Coast Live Oak

One of bunches of Alligator Lizards

I surprised a covey of quail, and they hustled out of sight. I was able to catch Mom before she went under the brush to collect and reassure her babies. I listened to them for quite a while murmuring among themselves. And darn it! I forgot again that I had the movie feature on my camera. I could've recorded their sweet voices. I did find this, though. My quail sounded softer than that, and there were cute baby voices answering back. But you get the idea.

Summer Solstice Parade

Happy Summer!

Santa Barbarans love summer! One of our beloved community events is the annual Solstice Parade. It is part music, part dance, part art, part theater, all fun. This parade is unique, as there are no printed words allowed, no motorized floats, no animals; just people making merry! It was a perfect summer day, temperature in the mid-80s at high noon!

This year's theme was "Solar Flairs."

Here are some pictures and a few videos. The videos are each only a few seconds long. They give you a tiny taste of the party atmosphere.

I wish I remembered at the beginning of the parade
that I had a video feature on my camera;
this group was good!

Santa Barbara's Mayor, Marty Blum

A Lounge Lizard

Again, Hula-Hoopers difficult to catch with a still shot.

This picture shows about a third of the hanging triangles float.

I tried loading these videos on YouTube, but they didn't work at all. And after hours of telling me they were uploading! Boo! Enjoy the Blogger versions, anyway.

Yessssssssss!

Finally!

Mike and I took a walk along the bluffs above the beach near Coal Oil Point today. On the way back, I finally got to see my snake! This California Kingsnake was a big 'un...about 3-4 feet long! By the time I got the camera out and turned on, it had crossed the path and slithered under some brush. But I got a couple shots!

What exactly is my line, anyway?

This video is 9+ minutes.

Timmmmm....berrrrrrrrrr!

Chuckbert's recent blog post reminded me that I had these pictures on my computer. After fighting my mac to give 'em up so I can use it (I hate iPhoto! It is the worst program I've ever used!), I submit them to you.

We took this ginormous ash tree down in December 2007. It was destroying our driveway and our neighbor hated the leaves come January. It was a hard decision, but we decided it had to go.

The workmen worked very fast! It was down in a day, and they came the next day to grind the stump. It was raining that day, and I was a little nervous about someone getting hurt. I guess they know what they're doing!

I decided to take some pictures last minute. I didn't get the final shots, but you saw the fungus (sorry, slime mold) helping to complete the circle of life by sucking on the leftover chips.

Some of these photos are rather dark, but after messing around with just trying to get them to use them, I didn't have the energy to fool with them.

By the way, we're waiting for when our tree no longer dominates the Google Maps image of our neighborhood!
