I haven't been blogging too much because I have difficulty getting the photos off of my camera to my computer.  Ever since we upgraded the operating system and the printer/scanner, it hasn't been working. My tech person has limited time to help, so I am in a bit of a limbo.  I hope soon I'll get some good stuff up!

But here is a video to hold you over.  I am so happy that Congress did the right thing and passed health care reform.  Obviously the width is too much for my little column, and I don't know how to change it, so you can see the video on YouTube.

A Strange Pull

After watching the President's speech to America's schoolchildren today, I felt a strange pull. I don't know what it is, but right after I heard Obama talk, I wanted to work to establish a new economic system in this country. I wanted to go to the library and read some works by Karl Marx. That Obama has real powers!

Who else feels perplexed by the "outrage" by some Americans about the speech? I feel sad, too, that the President is looked upon as some sort of enemy. When the news came out about his proposed speech, there was misinformation and fear swirling around those groups who don't like Obama. It seemed silly and a bit frightening all at once that people can blindly make decisions like that.

As President Obama said today, "And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself."

Education. Reading. It's not just for schoolchildren anymore.

One Week!

One more week till the dum-dum leaves the house!

Kevin will be 18! An adult!

But he won't be leaving quite yet.....the real dum-dum is leaving! A momentous day!

I'll be watching the inauguration!

First Time Voter

Ahem, well.... while looking for the iron yesterday (which I never found....goes to show how much I iron!), I ran across my box of childhood memories. Now you get to travel back with me, too, as you've done with Chuckbert!

The box held stuff from elementary school all the way up to college. Interesting that within the same box there are early tries at essays with new-writer paper, up to Chemistry 1A midterms and final from my Freshman year at UCSB (by the way, I took this class with Mikey; one of the few classes we had together!).

I chose this to share first, being so fitting to the season!



I don't remember how I voted, but here are the propositions that were offered.

I haven't missed an election since! And I still haven't registered with a party.

So, we have elected Barack Obama to be our 44th President. Wow.

It was p-doobie's recent post about the love of reading that I remembered reading The Weekly Reader. In 1972, when I was in the second grade, Shirley Chisholm ran for President. I remember reading about her in the Weekly Reader.

It is thanks to pioneers like Shirley Chisholm, among many others, that my generation can shrug its shoulders at a black presidential candidate, or a woman presidential candidate, or a black woman presidential candidate ....why not?

Why not?

It is an historic day.

Congratulations to President-Elect Barack Obama and to all Americans!
