It was a low-key couple of days in Las Vegas. We enjoyed our relaxing time.
We stayed at the Luxor. I had wanted to stay there ever since it opened and was the gigantic monolith greeting visitors on the south end of the strip. It was the swank place then. Now, it is dwarfed by the Mandalay Bay, and isn't anymore the go-to place with all the newer, taller, glitzier hotels up the strip. Still, it was a great place to stay. We were on the 22nd floor, and here is our view. (I found the stitch tool!)
You can see the Sphinx right in the middle, and the airport is beyond that empty parking lot. The strip is to the left. I enjoyed sitting and watching airplanes and helicopters take off and land.
And here is our view from our door. It's a cool hotel. I liked to pretend I was in Willy Wonka's factory when we used the inclinator!
Erin and I walked around and shopped, Kevin and Mike went to Bass Pro Shop.

The line was looong (and worth the wait; the Buffet at Bellagio was wonderful!), so we passed the time goofing around.

On Tuesday we drove to the Hoover Dam. What a cool structure! They are building a by-pass highway, including this big honkin' arch bridge. The bridge is an amazing structural feat in itself, and was as interesting to see as the dam! It will be neat to go back and walk across it!

I didn't get too many good dam pictures. I'll leave you to see good photos at the website. We took the generator tour, though, and here is a picture of the dam turbines.

And after we shopped and ate lunch, we were off to Zion National Park.....

Vegas is fuuun for a few days...lotsa walking! Was it super crowded for spring break?

Yes, BobBIE, it was quite busy there. The dam tour guide said it was one of their busiest days!
Chuckbert, I'm not much of a Vegas fan, either. When we go, I'm always hoping to get to Red Rock, but it doesn't happen. Still, it is always fun to be with the family!
Still laugh at our trip to Las Vegas with Mikey and Peg picking me up at the airport. I was lucky to get a ride to the house.
One of my co-workers was telling me that I should take the girls to Hoover Dam. Looks like a cool-or hot-place to go.
I like to go to Vegas, but away from the strip. I found a really neat baseball card store in the part of town reserved for residents.
One of my LAHS classmates was the buyer for the Luxor when it was being built and got to go to Egypt to spend the developer's money.
I certainly hope they connect those two sections of the bridge before you walk across it!
I keep grumping about using all that electricity from the dam to support the Las Vegas glitz instead of spreading it around the rest of the country. Mrs. Scrooge, that's me.

RetroMag,I was surprised to learn how much electricity the dam generates and how many areas it goes to. What's more astounding is that the engineers and designers could not have foreseen in 1931 the boom in the population of Los Angeles and Phoenix, just two communities which are served by the electricity generated at Hoover Dam. So, ya gotta give Vegas a *little* credit for using cleanly generated power.
Oh, and to answer your question. No, I lost 60 cents of the dollar I put into the machine and Mike didn't gamble at all!
O.K., I'm somewhat mollified to know that the rest of the country gets SOME of that electricity! Thanks for helping to ease my mind.
